Longwood Gardens. Light: Installations by Bruce Munro
The Longwood Gardens Light app is designed to guide users through a groundbreaking exhibit of eight site-specific installations set throughout the gardens and in the conservatory. Lake and meadow, forest and fields are transformed by UK artist Bruce Munro's illuminated light works, which make use of ordinary objects to extraordinary effect.
The app guides visitors through the gardens with geo-referenced maps and display behind-the-scenes videos, interviews with both the artist and the gardeners and stunning image galleries.
A key part of the app is the ability for visitors to share comments and photos of their experience which become part of a stream of user generated content viewable in the app, and also plotted on a map (Thanks to devices GPS) on large screens, providing a snapshot of visitors activity throughout the gardens.
The comprehensive visitor experience included rental devices, docents carrying iPad apps to enagage with passersby and a touchscreen kiosk where users can leave their thoughts. All user generated contents plus additional media and information are also available online on a dedicated microsite that we developed for the exhibition.

Though we were cautious about the technology and design expertise required to create our first app, we found the perfect partner in GuideOne.
From the initial planning stages to the final execution, GuideOne demonstrated extraordinary patience explaining the technology so we could make informed decisions and ultimately create an app that extended the Light exhibit beyond the visitors' experience in the Gardens.
